Review: The Invitation by Veronica Henry
March Book of the Month: The Invitation by Veronica Henry
Book Club Review (Mar 2026)
I will be honest: finding genuinely brilliant Romance books that suit our membership is something I find really hard. Last year we did not quite get there in the way I wanted to. This year I was determined to do better, and when I came across The Invitation, I knew I had absolutely nailed it. What I love about this book is that it is Veronica Henry's first foray into Historical Fiction, which means it brings the most wonderful combination of romance and history together in one beautifully written package. For a book club that loves both genres, it felt like it was made for us.
Set between post-war London and the beautiful Foxwood Manor in Somerset, The Invitation brings together three women whose lives collide at a glittering ball, each carrying their own secrets, heartbreak and hope. It is a sweeping, romantic story filled with secret love affairs, unexpected twists and the kind of warmth that makes you want to read it all in one sitting.
Our members absolutely loved it, scoring it a full 5 out of 5. The warmth that comes off every page is something quite special. One member described it as exactly what they needed at a time when the world feels particularly overwhelming, a genuine comfort and escape that reminded them why they love reading in the first place.
Several members noted that Romance is not their usual genre, but found themselves completely drawn in regardless. The writing is warm, thoughtful and deeply engaging, and meeting Veronica Henry at book club made the whole experience even more memorable.
Veronica Henry is a Sunday Times bestselling author who began her career writing scripts for some of Britain's best loved television dramas. Her passion for storytelling shines through on every page of this book.
A genuinely uplifting read. Exactly the kind of book this book club was made for.
